Alumni Seminar Featuring Profs. Cook and Pease

Ideologies Behind the Books of Dr. Seuss

The DCMW is pleased to announce that on February 28, 1998, Professors Bill Cook and Don Pease will present a seminar on the Life and Humor of Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss).   This dynamic duo from the Dartmouth English Department will explore Seuss' books from The Cat in the Hat forward, which set a clear and conscious challenge to the long-standing basal readers.

This challenge is best understood by examining the construction of childhood in the Seuss works: how the world of adults is related to the child's world, and the role of reason, imagination, and fantasy as the foregrounding of rebellion against social norms and prohibitions.

Seuss' work resonates in the ideological struggles of the 1960's, and Professor Bill Cook's examination will reveal Seuss' contribution to the ethos of that period as far more significant than might appear at first glance.  Professor Pease will discuss how Ted Geisel's life, especially his Dartmouth experience, affected his writings.  Please watch your mail for a brochure and order form for this extraordinary event.  Please call Ron London '67, 612-340-0234, for more information.

From the President

G'day from Downunder!  Thanks to the Internet age, I am coming to you from Australia, where my husband (Kaz Lawler '84) is temporarily relocated for work.  I write amid kangaroos, koalas, and spring weather to welcome you to a new year with DCMW.

We've already had a busy year with the club, beginning with a summer picnic out on Lake Minnetonka at the home of Joan and Rich Baker, parents of recent graduate Elizabeth Baker '97.  In October and November, green clad alumni joined Cornell and Harvard alum to cheer the Big Green football team for live games transmitted via satellite.

Looking forward, we have our annual holiday gathering at Gluek's in December, a tour of the Disney exhibit at the Walker Art Center in January, and a fabulous alumni seminar in February.  Please refer to related articles in this newsletter and put these events on your calendar -- we'd love to see you join us for some socializing, culture, education, and friendship.  Also, please send in your 1997-98 dues so that the club can continue to offer a broad variety of great events.  We look forward to seeing you!

-- Anne Lawler '86, DCMW President

Welcome New Alumni Councilor

The DCMW welcomes Hampton Rich '89 as its new representative to the Alumni Council.   At Dartmouth, Hampton was a member of the Glee Club and President of the Tri-Kap fraternity.  After Dartmouth, Hampton became Dr. Rich at Baylor College of Medicine.   He trained in surgery and pediatric surgery at the University of Minnesota and at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  Hampton has been in private practice of pediatric surgery in Minneapolis since 1983 and is presently Chief of Staff at Children's Health Care.  In addition to his busy career, Hampton is an active alumnus who will now fill a three-year term as the chief liaison between the DCMW and the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
