A warm summer greeting to all of you Jim McFarland 86 As a long time resident of Minneapolis, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy Minnesotas summer season. Swimming with the kids, barbecues with friends and family, long runs on a local trail, I just cannot get enough of the warm weather. I hope you are enjoying this time as well. Summer also concludes another year of activity for the Dartmouth Club of the Midwest. As usual, we have had an event-filled winter and spring schedule. Here is a list of club happenings since our last newsletter: In December, Jay Fiedler 94 (and Vikings back-up Quarterback) spoke to the club on the Vikings outstanding season. Jay gave us an insiders view of the focus, friendships, and determination of the new Vikings team. The event was a great combination of Dartmouth Lineage and Minnesota Patriotism. In February, Professors William Cook and Donald Pease once again returned to Minneapolis for a continuing education series, "The Life and Times of Norman MacLean." As before, these two dynamic Professors re-ignited dormant alumni craniums to the value of literary stimulation. At this time the club is working with local adoption agencies to determine if these two are eligible for permanent placement within our club family. In April, the club hosted a reception for the freshly accepted Class of 03. The 1998-1999 recruiting year smashed all preceding records. New benchmarks were set for number of schools visited, number of alumni interviews, total students interviewed, total students accepted, and percent of students matriculating! (See Dennis Ryans column for details). Thanks to a strong dues collection year, the club was able to purchase Dartmouth T-shirts for every accepted student. As President, I am proud of our club and of our local alumnis continuing support for this program. You all are to be commended. Finally in May, the club hosted its annual dinner. Diana Pierce, KARE 11 News Anchor, shared with us her private research into the life of Dr. Charles Eastman, Dartmouth Class of 1887. Dr. Eastman was a full-blooded Sioux born in 1858 near Redwood Falls Minnesota. Diana presented to the club fascinating facts of Dr. Eastmans life including his familys flight to Canada after the Sioux uprising, his quest for academic excellence, and his memoirs as a physician at Wounded Knee. Dianas presentation was a wonderful amalgam of Native American Heritage, Minnesota History, and Dartmouth influence. The audience is eagerly awaiting Dianas successful manuscript of Dr. Eastmans life. So there you have it, another successful season for the Dartmouth Club of the Midwest. Again, I wish to thank the many alumni volunteers who contribute to the clubs success. If you have not volunteered in the past, but would like to be more involved in the club, please email me at: GONE or send a note to the club at the D.C.M.W., P.O. Box 300551, Mpls, MN 55403. We can always use additional help. Respectfully, Jim McFarland 86 |
Enrollment Update Apparently undeterred by the rising costs of an Ivy League education and the usual campus controversies, a record number of Minnesota high school seniors applied to -- and will be attending -- Dartmouth as members of the Class of 03. Best of all, this was a very high-quality group of candidates from great schools around the State. Their grade point averages, test scores, and lists of activities and accomplishments made them stand out amongst their peers. They are musicians, white-water canoers, soccer players, skiers, actors, and class presidents, among many other things. We will be very proud to welcome them to the ranks of the alumni in a few years! Over 140 students applied this year and, with the help of about 40 alumni, we were able to interview nearly 100 of the candidates. Thirty of them were accepted and 25 will be matriculating this fall. All of these are record numbers. The class of 03 from Minnesota consists of 13 women and 12 men from 20 different schools. Most live in the Twin Cities, but we also have students coming from Warroad, Duluth, St. Cloud and Rochester. This banner year was the result of many factors, but most important is the support of the alumni for the college. Potential candidates usually first become aware of Dartmouth because an alum suggests it to them. Our Dartmouth Club hosts several receptions and works with the Admissions Office on school visits to encourage the best candidates to apply. The one-on-one interaction with alumni through the admissions interview often makes the difference when the candidate later is choosing between Dartmouth and other highly competitive colleges. It is no coincidence that Minnesota has both one of the most active alumni clubs in the country and admissions results that far exceed all of the national averages.
Next year we hope to do even better on the interviewing front. There were still a number of candidates that we were unable to interview this year. We are always looking for a few more alumni to do these interviews. It is a very enjoyable experience to meet these amazing high school students and tell them about Dartmouth. You do not need any special experience or knowledge to be a good interviewer. We have materials which will help you answer any questions and conduct a good interview. In particular, we need alumni who have graduated from Dartmouth in the last 10 years; this is a way for you to make a significant contribution to the College that does not take too much time or cost any money! If you are interested in interviewing next year, please contact Dennis Ryan 81, 2200 Norwest Center, 90 South Seventh Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402, tel. Student Liaison Update I arrived in Hanover on June 23 for sophomore summer to humid, ninety-degree weather. Remembering that I did not have air conditioning in my new room, I thought, "It this is what its going to be like all summer, it is going to be a long ten weeks." I survived the first night of heat, but I could not help but dream about water skiing on the lakes of Minnesota. When I stepped outside the next day at 7:30 a.m., it was already eighty degrees. After getting my classes in order and registering, I was off to the weight room for lifting and conditioning with the rest of the football team. Once we completed the two-and-a-half hour session, my teammates and I were ready for a swim in the Connecticut River. The moment I jumped off the rope swing and hit the refreshing water of the river, my attitude about spending the summer in Hanover completed changed. What could be better than relaxing in the river with my best friends after working hard all day? I went back to the river each of the next five days, and I cannot think of a better substitute for those lakes I had been dreaming about. Todd B. Jelen |

| Interested in Adopting a High School? Are you aware of the Dartmouth Book Award Program? Each year the club sponsors book awards to outstanding high school juniors in the area. Local alumni "adopt" a nearby high school. These alumni then purchase and present an outstanding student at the school with a book in the name of the college. The Book Award program is an excellent recruiting tool, for it brings "Dartmouth" awareness to outstanding students just as they start their college search. Recommended books include: The Poetry of Robert Frost, by Robert
Frost, Edward C. Lathem, Ed. The following schools are in need of a sponsor: If you would like to adopt a school, please contact Libby Carrier 89 at (612) 381-0551, or EMAIL GONE |
