It's our pleasure and privilege to invite you to the next in our series of Distinguished Speaker Luncheons featuring:

Robert Bruininks

President Bruininks will speak on the state of higher education today. Obviously, he is uniquely well-qualified to give us an idea of the challenges and opportunities facing academia currently. President Bruininks has steered the University through some of the toughest budget times in its history while simultaneously pushing ahead in a variety of research areas including brain development and vitality over the lifespan, translation of basic science to improve health, arts and humanities, foods and human health, and the environment and renewable energy. We are extremely fortunate President Bruininks can find time in his busy schedule to speak to the group, and we encourage all of you to come down for a fine discussion on higher education (a subject dear to many of us), good food, and probably some Dartmouth chat.

Dartmouth Night at the Theater

Please see the attached special e-card invitation.

Minnesota native and playwright, Phil Olson'79, will be in town to host a special "Dartmouth Night at the Theater" on September 24th featuring Phil's new comedy,

"Don't Hug Me: A Minnesota love story with singin' and stuff".

The show will start at 8:00 at Hennepin Stages (formerly Hey City Theater) at 824 Hennepin Avenue.

Phil has invited all of us to be his special guests, so all Dartmouth alums and their guests will be offered discounted ticket pricing ($20 per ticket if you mention the password "hug") and will be invited to a reception after the show.

Tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster (612-673-0404) or in person at the State Theater at 805 Hennepin Avenue (Monday through Friday 10:00 until 6:00 or Saturday 12:00 until 3:00) or at the Hennepin Stages up to 2 hours before the show.

Please let me know if you plan on attending so we can get a rough Dartmouth group headcount, because Phil said he's paying for the beer!

Thank you and I hope to see you at the show.

Continuing Education Seminar

This year's seminar will be held Saturday, March 20, 2004 from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM at Coffman Memorial Union on the Minneapolis Campus of the University of Minnesota.

The title of this year's seminar is "Cultures of Violence and Peace and the Resurgence of Militant Nationalism."  Most national communities are imagined as having emerged out of the sacralized violence of the original "patriots" who established the geographical and political-cultural borders of the new state, the "founding fathers" who brought the nation-state to life. With special attention to the break up of old empires and the emergence of new nationalisms since the Cold War, this seminar will examine the role that violence has long played and still plays in nation-states including contemporary America.

Seminar Faculty

Don Pease, Professor of English, Avalon Foundation Chair of the Humanities, Chair of the Dartmouth Liberal Studies Program and winner of the 1981 Distinguished Teaching Award at Dartmouth, is an authority on nineteenth and twentieth-century American literature and literary theory.

Ron Edsforth is Visiting Professor of History and War and Peace Studies. He has been teaching at Dartmouth since 1993. Ron received his BA from Georgetown University (1970), and MA (1975) and PhD (1982) from Michigan State University.
