Holiday Gathering at Gluek's Dec 10, 2009 “The Dartmouth Club of the Midwest held its annual Holiday Party at Gluek’s Bar & Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis after work on December 10, 2009: a cold and frigid night with temperatures barely above 0 degrees. One of the first to arrive was Sharon Alexander ’06. When I found out that she was Dean Spatz’s ‘66 daughter and that Dean and Carol thought the trip from the western suburbs to downtown Minneapolis might be too much given the temperature, we had to call Dean and give him a hard time! Dean thought that the current ten (10) or so alums there were a pretty good showing given the weather. Little does he realize (and me for that matter) the fortitude of the Dartmouth gang, especially the younger classes, as the Dartmouth clan started to show and ultimately we had one of our best showings ever with over forty (40) alums: many from the younger classes including Bill Lundin ’09 and Taylor Stevenson ‘10 ! We hope to see you all again at some of the other DCMW events! Happy Holidays! Enjoy the pictures! Steve Faber ‘82” |

DCMW and Tuck Club Panel
Discussion: Healthcare in the US The current healthcare debate consumes our news on a daily basis, and the DCMW did its part to inform fellow alums about some of the critical issues at the recent Health Care forum held at Edina Country Club on October 21. Our moderator for the event was Professor Bob Hansen, Senior Associate Dean from the Dartmouth Tuck School of Business. Our panel of experts included Brad Beard, President of Fairview Southdale Hospital , Bill Blazar, SVP Business Development & Public Affairs, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce , Dr. Pat Courneya, Medical Director, Health Partners, and Carolyn Pare, CEO of Buyers Health Care Action Group. This fine group represented the major participants in this important debate including healthcare providers, policy experts, business leaders, insurance industry representatives, and academics, as they discussed the proposed changes to our healthcare system and their implications for the future. The agenda was as follows: 5:00 - 5:30 - cocktails and hors d'oeuvres with introductions by Rob Albright, DCMW Distinguished Speakers Chair 5:30 - 6:00 - Dean Hansen opened with a short "lay of the land" as it relates to the current health care debate. Each of the panelists then took 5-10 minutes to introduce themselves and gave their views on critical issues in the debate. 6:00 - 6:30 - Panel discussion with Dean Hansen asking the panel questions. 6:30 - 7:00 - Open discussion with questions from the audience. The event was free courtesy of the Dartmouth Club of the Midwest! Many thanks to all who attended. We look forward to seeing you at our next Club Speakers event. Dartmouth Club Community Event
at Boulder Options August 12th, 2009 Bolder Options: It was a lovely evening highlighted by the appearance, inspiration and speech delivered by the Lynx basketball star, Quanitra Hollingsworth # 9, aka "Q"! There were about 200 kids that attended each getting a back pack with school supplies. Steve Merta ' 87 was the burger-meister extraordinaire! The rest of the Dartmouth crew did the set up; served the meal and took everything down, put it away and cleaned up. Dartmouth was well represented and deeply appreciated!
This was our 3rd Annual Back to School Event. The event was held Wednesday, August 12, from 5:30-8:30, at Bolder Options'
newly renovated (and historic) headquarters located in the mansion district of

Annual Dinner With Dartmouth Football Coach Buddy Teevens Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 "The Annual Dinner at Minikahda Country Club was a smashing success! Coach Buddy Teevens entertained over sixty fellow Dartmouth alums (a few who played with Buddy at Dartmouth including Tom Marek '79, Todd Markman '82 and Steve Faber '82), some Dartmouth veterans of the Club (Ted Furber '58 and John Hughes '66), soon to be newly minted freshman football players, some current players and their parents! A lot has changed in both the Ivy football environment and at Dartmouth since Coach Teeven's initial tenure with the team but the standing room crowd only stood to clap at the end of Coach Teeven's inspirational speech as it would appear that those in attendance believe that the Big Green's approach will result in a substantially more successful win-loss record this year! It is apparent from one of the parents of a current football player, Judge McManus, that Coach Teevens is mentoring his players to be fine young men as the Judge said with a few tears: "My wife and I raised our son, Tim, for eighteen years to be an outstanding young man and when he made his decision where to attend college (he could have picked any number of the Ivies), we felt leaving him with Coach Teevens would best continue our efforts and in retrospect, we can truly say we made the right decision!" An alumna said that she did not really understand or, for that matter, particularly care for football, but after hearing Coach Teeven's speech she wanted to run out on the field and play! Afterwards, many alumni sat and reminisced for hours out on the deck at Minikahda (including the three Markman brothers – all graduates) looking out over Lake Calhoun with downtown Minneapolis in the background. It was truly a wonderful evening! Now it is time to win games! Keep an eye on the Dartmouth team this year! P.S. Thanks to Jay Miller whose membership afforded us the chance to use the Minikahda Club facilities!" Thanks to Nadine Parris '06, DCMW, Activities Director! |

WELCOME THE NEWLY ADMITTED CLASS OF '13 TO
DARTMOUTH -- April 2; 5:00 p.m. In just a couple of weeks the Class of 2013 will be receiving their notices of acceptance from the College. Please join us in the fun of delivering Dartmouth T shirts to each of the Minnesota candidates. Many Clubs around the country now do this, but the tradition began right here in Minnesota, thanks to Jim McFarland '86. The candidates (and their parents) are always excited and impressed when an alumni drops off a T shirt shortly after they learn they have been accepted at Dartmouth. We expect great results from this incredible pool of applicants, so we will need at least a dozen alumni to help out with the deliveries. Please join us on Thursday, April 2, at 5:00 p.m. at the Champps Restaurant, located in Butler Square in downtown Minneapolis on the corner of 6th Street and First Avenue, near Target Center. We'll have refreshments and pass out names, addresses, maps and T shirts for delivery. It is always great fun to meet these students, so please put it on your calendar and help us welcome them to our Dartmouth family. For more information, contact District Enrollment Director Dennis Ryan '81 at (612) 766-6810 or Jim McFarland '86 at 612 371-2856. See you there! |

Professor Dean Lacey |
Saturday, February 28, 2009 Annual Club Seminar "The Wisdom of Voters" Click here for a copy of the brochure. What is the best way to determine the number of jelly beans in a jar? What is the best way to determine which horse is most likely to win a horse race? What is the best way to determine the location of a lost submarine? It turns out that the answers to each of these questions is the same: ask a group of people who are diverse, independent, and decentralized and then aggregate their judgments. The annual Dartmouth Seminar was held on Saturday, February 28. Alumni from classes 1956 through 2013 (yes, one accepted member and one hope to be member of the class that will matriculate in 2009 also attended) heard Professor Dean Lacey from the Government Department use the book, “The Wisdom of Crowds” by James Surowiecki to discuss the conditions that enable the decisions of a group of people to be better than the decisions made by experts and other smart people in numerous scenarios, including markets, business, and government. Just as importantly, Professor Lacey also discussed the conditions that research shows cause decisions by a group of people to be worse. The questions whether and how the wisdom of a group of people can be harnessed in any given decision-making situation have interesting and important implications for all of us at all levels in our daily lives. If you have an opportunity to read “The Wisdom of Crowds,” you will not be disappointed. Thanks to Professor Lacey and each of the attendees for the interesting presentation and discussion. |
